Demerol is another member of the opioid family or narcotics. It is used for moderate to severe pain but due to its high potential for dependency it is no longer prescribed as much as before. It is still used in hospitals and other medical settings so that use can be supervised. In some parts of Europe it is also used for pain relief during childbirth.
How Does It Work?
The drug works by binding to the pain receptors in the brain and reducing the sensations felt, a patient will be aware of when the drugs have stopped working as the pain will return until another dose is taken. due to the fact that it is very fast acting it is said to be one of the most addictive opiates, it creates a rush and a sensation of euphoria and it is this high that users want to try and recreate.
It is said that Demerol is one of the easiest versions of the opiate family of drugs to become addicted to, this addiction can take hold very quickly and before patients are even aware that it has happened. They may suddenly notice that the drug has a less portent effect on pain relief or that it wears off more quickly and once it has worn off they may start to notice withdrawal symptoms. It is common for a patient to try and increase their dose when they start to experience this but this only helps the addiction to take hold faster and become more severe and risky.
There are a lot of health risks associated with opiate use, as well as binding to the pain receptors in the brain they can also affect the respiratory system in the short term and cause breathing to become more shallow, this can be dangerous during sleep when your breathing becomes more shallow anyway and you could risk going into respiratory arrest. A more long term effect is what Demerol can do to your liver and kidneys, as these are the organs responsible for filtering all of the toxins from your body, common sense (and medical research) has shown that those toxins will cause damage the more of them that are ingested. This risk is dramatically increased if you take the drug in formulations which also contain Tylenol. In cases of overdose there must always be swift medical attention sought as a loss of consciousness can lead to vomiting and asphyxiation.
Usually the first sign of a dependency is when a person experiences withdrawal symptoms, these include things such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and muscle and bone pain. whilst these may seem like the symptoms of a normal viral illness, they can be made to go away by taking another dose of Demerol. There are also some psychological effects which can include anxiety and depression, as well as complete mental breakdowns.
A person who has an addiction to Demerol, or in fact to any drug, may be in denial, they will not want to admit that they have a problem and that they are hurting those who care about them. They may be behaving inappropriately, lying, cheating and breaking the law in order to get the drugs to satisfy their addiction. This is when an intervention will need to be staged, many people choose to hold one that just involves family members but this can be detrimental as there are a lot of suppressed emotions involved. Instead it is more beneficial to the family as well as to the person with the addiction, to get some outside intervention from a professional who can remain objective and help to facilitate the treatment needed.
The first step in treatment for Demerol addiction is to cut off the supply. Usually the best way to do this is to check into a drug rehabilitation center for a full detoxification. Detox can take several weeks and will be the most physically demanding stage. It can be quite unpleasant for the patients going through it but once the process is over they will feel much more healthy both physically and mentally. Once the detox stage is over they can begin to look at starting their lives over and living lives of sobriety. It will be tough and will involve many months of therapy both group and individual before the patients will be ready to face the world again. Addiction is a long journey and a difficult one at that but it can be done.
