What Are The Dangers Of Alcohol Abuse?

There are many reasons why people develop the habit of abusing alcohol. No matter where you look in the world you’re likely to find that drinking alcohol is part of every culture. Different cultures view the practice of drinking alcohol very differently.

Why People Drink

There are many reasons why people may choose to drink alcohol and the decision to drink often depends on the culture you’re from. Some use it as a celebratory gesture and cannot enjoy the fruits of their accomplishments without it, others use it for recreational or social pleasures and other cultures have set age limits that show that drinking alcohol is a rite of passage. It is a symbol of adulthood or recognition of a major milestone in someone’s life. There are other cultures where drinking alcohol is so common that it takes the place of water during their mealtimes.

Whats the Problem?

While people have been consuming alcohol for many years and overdrinking has been an ongoing problem for just as long, the problems have escalated for a number of reasons. While his environment often dictates the amount of alcohol a person drinks some cultures have a higher propensity for sensitivity to alcoholism. You will probably notice that some cultures are more often known for overindulgence while other cultures who have for years imbibed regularly seem to have little effect. Introducing alcohol to some cultures has sent many of their society in a downward spiral that has resulted in numerous cases of alcohol abuse. For those cultures that have a low tolerance to it, they will quickly develop a dependency on the alcohol leading them towards alcoholism.

Another reason for this problem is that studies have shown that alcohol is getting introduced to people at younger ages than ever before. 18 years ago, the average age for alcohol abuse was 18; today patients of alcohol abuse problems are as young as 8 years old. Drinking at such a young age can lead to major health problems even before the child reaches adulthood.

Health Risks

There are many health risks that can come from overindulgence in alcohol that can extend far beyond what is commonly known to most people. Many people are aware that the liver is severely impacted by excessive drinking but they don’t realize that the gastrointestinal system can be equally damaged. As a matter of fact, many of the cancers that have been diagnosed have been gastrointestinal cancers as a result of alcohol abuse.

While drinking alcohol is socially acceptable in nearly every country in the world there are major and life threatening health dangers that can come from not drinking responsibly and those that have a low tolerance to the drink should not drink at all.
